Private Alcohol Home Detox

Support to Stop Drinking in the Privacy of Your Own Home

If staying in residential rehabilitation feels difficult because of children, employment, caring responsibilities or other commitments, alcohol home detox may offer a more practical alternative.

Sobriety & Wellbeing provides regular personal contact and dedicated support throughout your detox.

Medical assessment and prescribing are provided separately by a GMC-registered doctor. Any prescribed medication is dispensed and delivered by a pharmacy.

Our alcohol home-detox service is available to suitable adults across England and Wales.

What Is an Alcohol Home Detox?

Alcohol home detox allows a suitable person to complete a prescribed alcohol-withdrawal plan at home rather than staying in a residential treatment facility.

Suitability and the individual prescribed plan are determined through a medical assessment.

Home detox is not appropriate for everyone. Your individual circumstances must be considered before a detox can be arranged.

Why Some People Choose Alcohol Home Detox

  • Remain in Familiar Surroundings

You can complete the detox in the privacy of your own home, surrounded by familiar people and belongings.

    Comfortable and familiar home environment
  • Stay Closer to Your Family

For parents and carers, an extended residential stay may be difficult to arrange. Home detox can allow suitable clients to remain closer to their families, provided that appropriate childcare, caring and support arrangements are in place.

  • Maintain Greater Privacy

Some people feel more comfortable receiving support privately at home rather than entering a residential facility.

  • Fit the Detox Around Your Circumstances

A home-based service may be easier to arrange around employment, family or caring responsibilities. You must still allow sufficient time to rest and follow the instructions provided.

  • A Home-Based Alternative to Residential Treatment

Because home detox does not include accommodation and round-the-clock residential facilities, it may cost less than residential rehabilitation. The overall cost will depend on your individual requirements.

Alcohol Withdrawal Symptoms

People who have become physically dependent on alcohol may experience withdrawal symptoms after reducing or stopping drinking.

Common alcohol withdrawal symptoms can include:

  • Shaking or tremors

  • Sweating

  • Anxiety or agitation

  • Nausea or vomiting

  • Headaches

  • Difficulty sleeping

  • A racing heartbeat

  • Reduced appetite

  • Irritability

  • Difficulty concentrating

  • More serious symptoms can include:

  • Hallucinations

  • Seizures

  • Severe confusion

  • Loss of consciousness

  • Delirium tremens

  • Alcohol withdrawal can be dangerous and, in some circumstances, life-threatening. Do not suddenly stop drinking without medical advice if you may be physically dependent on alcohol.

Call 999 or go to A&E if you or someone else experiences a seizure, hallucinations, severe confusion, loss of consciousness or another medical emergency.

    Alcohol Withdrawal Timeline

Withdrawal experiences vary. A general timeline cannot predict exactly what an individual will experience.

      Approximately 6 to 12 Hours

Early withdrawal symptoms may begin after reducing or stopping alcohol. These can include shaking, sweating, anxiety, nausea, headaches and difficulty sleeping.

      The First 48 Hours

Symptoms may become more noticeable during the first two days. This is also a period when serious withdrawal complications can occur in some people.

      Approximately 3 to 7 Days

For many people, physical withdrawal symptoms begin to improve during this period. However, disrupted sleep, anxiety, low mood or cravings may continue for longer.

The length of the prescribed detox is determined according to your individual circumstances. Do not change the prescribed plan unless instructed by the prescribing doctor.

Is Home Detox Suitable for Everyone?

No. Whether detox at home is appropriate depends on your alcohol use, withdrawal history, physical and mental health, current medication, home circumstances and available support.

A suitable adult—such as a partner, relative, friend or carer—must be available throughout the agreed detox period.

Medical suitability is determined following an individual assessment. If home detox is not appropriate, a different treatment setting may be recommended.

    Understanding the Cost

The overall cost of alcohol home detox can vary according to your individual requirements and the arrangements needed.

Before you agree to proceed, we will explain the cost of the service and any known costs payable separately.

If the medical assessment identifies additional medication, monitoring equipment or further professional support that may be required, the applicable cost will be explained before it is arranged.
